Editorial standards

Useful advice begins with reader trust.

E / 01

This policy explains how DIY Home Comfort turns experience, research, and expert context into practical guidance—and how we handle safety, commercial relationships, updates, and corrections.

Our editorial purpose

DIY Home Comfort exists to help homeowners understand their options and make better-informed decisions about projects, products, spaces, and home systems. Our content should be clear, practical, appropriately cautious, and honest about tradeoffs.

Experience and expertise

Scott Harding’s HVAC and renovation background and Lara Harding’s interior-design and renovation experience help shape the questions we ask and the tradeoffs we look for. Personal experience is a starting point, not a substitute for current evidence, specialist judgment, manufacturer instructions, or an on-site assessment.

Research and sourcing

Writers and editors should prefer primary, authoritative, and current sources. Depending on the topic, that may include manufacturer documentation, building-code authorities, government agencies, standards organizations, qualified tradespeople, designers, engineers, and direct product testing.

  • Material claims should be supported and checked before publication.
  • Regional differences in codes, climate, product availability, and terminology should be made clear.
  • Instructions should identify meaningful safety limits and when a licensed professional is the appropriate next step.

Independence and commercial relationships

Editorial conclusions should not be sold. Advertising, sponsorship, affiliate relationships, product samples, or other commercial arrangements must be disclosed clearly when they could affect how a reasonable reader understands a piece.

Product coverage and recommendations

Recommendations should be based on reader needs, relevant evidence, and transparent criteria—not simply popularity or commission potential. We state the basis for a recommendation and do not imply hands-on testing when a product was assessed through specifications, research, or specialist input.

Automation, AI, and editorial review

Tools may assist with research organization, drafting, formatting, or publishing workflows. Automation does not replace accountable editorial review. Before publication, content should be checked by a human editor for accuracy, clarity, originality, disclosures, safety context, and fit with this policy.

Corrections and updates

When we learn that something material is wrong or misleading, we aim to correct it promptly and make the change understandable to readers. Time-sensitive guides should be reviewed as products, standards, evidence, and best practices change.

Reader feedback

Readers can use the contact page to flag an error, request clarification, or suggest a topic. Useful criticism is part of making the publication better.
